Five Popular Marriage Myths to help you create a more realistic view of what happy-ever-after means.
1) There is only one Mr. Right.-If we believe that our chance of meeting
our "soulmate" is only one in six billion, then it is virtually impossible
for any of us to find a life partner.
2) If you love someone you have to marry him - Marriage is now a choice,
not a reason for suvival. While some women feel they need marriage to
celebrate or validate their relationships, others prefer to define their
relationships in their own terms and not be borne down by legalities
or traditions that, in their view, are obsolete.
3) Marriage guarantees security, stability and happiness - Many women
enjoy happy, fulfilling marriages, but there are also those who do not,
and their situation is rarely brought out in the open because it doesn’t
fit the traditional, romanticized picture of marriage.
4) You must get married before your biological clock stops ticking - This
is a situation where you have to decide what is right based on your own
beliefs—you’re the one who has to live with your own choices. Women
who feel a great need to become parents but want to stay unmarried say
adoption is one of the most morally correct ways to resolve their
situation.
5) Marriage is the only way to live happily ever after - Those who pre-
maturely succumb to this pressure lose out on many opportunities to
actualize themselves before they were weighed down by family ob-
ligations. At the same time those who wait too long before deciding
that marriage and children are what they want after all risk not being
able to make those dreams come true.
One thing remains the same–You hold the ultimate responsibility for your own happiness. Take charge of your destiny. Know what you want. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Be smart and be strong, and you will live happily ever after—no matter which path you choose to take..
